“As Long as They Don’t Have to See it”

Compassion in World Farming - Exports to TurkeyOften my blog posts are inspired by the wise words of a Facebook friend, and this one is no exception.

The words in full context are as follows:

Most people, Christian and otherwise are oblivious and indifferent to the suffering of animals so long as they don’t have to see it. I can’t take it. Which is why I removed myself from fb For two months. When I get on here for just a few minutes and I see people’s posts about pork roll and whatever, I have no doubt I made the right decision to get off of here.

I’ve taken myself off Facebook as well (just recently returned but probably won’t stay indefinitely).

But back to the heart of the matter.

My mind is filled with the images of the horror we inflict on innocent animals, and I know very well that most people would not pay to have it done if they had to see it.

And no one can force anyone to watch a video or even look briefly at a photo of the gut-wrenching cruelty and death meted out on a constant basis deliberately to animals by humans who confine, torture and ultimately slaughter gentle and trusting cows, pigs, sheep, etc.

As long as people don’t have to see it, they will continue to buy it unless they either get up the courage to seek out the images or even if they simply make the connection that what they buy is causing animal cruelty, something they would never support if they looked it straight in the eye and saw it clearly.

If we pay to have it done, don’t we owe the animals at least to have the guts to see exactly what we pay for?
