“I Would Never Hurt an Animal”

Other person: “I would never hurt or kill an animal”

Me: “I wouldn’t either.”

Other person: “I think cruelty to animals is horrible.”

Me: “I, do, too.”

Other person: “I only buy humane meat.”

Me: “What makes you feel it’s humane?”

Other person: “Because they raise them with kindness.”

Me: “Even if that’s so, and often it’s not, they all end up violently slaughtered.”

Other person: “But it’s humane slaughter.”

Me: “How is it humane?”

Other person: “It’s done quickly and painlessly.”

Me: “How do you know that?”

Other person: “Because it is.”

Me: “Have you visited a slaughterhouse?”

Other person: “No.”

Me: “Have you watched any undercover documentaries?”

Other person: “No.”

Me: “Would you be willing to?”

Other person: “No.”

Me: “Are you possibly afraid it’s not really humane?”

Other person: (no response).

If a person cannot watch Earthlings they should not be eating animals.

  2. I think this is exactly right – people are afraid to have their deeply held, fragile beliefs about the ‘humaneness’ of animal slaughter exploded. They are afraid what they see will mean they have to go vegan. And that makes them afraid too – afraid to be too different from everyone else, afraid to be ‘on the front line’. Human beings are not very brave, are they?
