Legal Doesn’t Equal Just or Kind

While some laws were created to protect the defenseless and prohibit the crimes of robbery, assault, murder, etc., we also know that not all laws in all time periods were or are just.

It’s legal to send a woman to prison in some countries if she’s raped (for instance, under United Arab Emirates law, rape victims are guilty of “illicit sex,” which is illegal, regardless of consent).

It was once legal to own slaves in this country and to beat your wife.

Animal exploitation–intense cruelty and killing– is all very legal.

It’s our job to reject any law that violates justice and compassion if we are the civilized people we say we are.
